Often, a new coder’s search for their first real coding position can last longer than hoped. When that's the case, it's understandable to worry about possibly forgetting some of what you've learned.

There’s so much to remember when studying to become a certified coder. Having to wait so long after passing your test to use your new skills can cause these concerns.

So, how can you keep all those guidelines fresh in your mind during the wait?

YouTube

YouTube is often a good learning resource, including for new medical coders. Maybe you even had a favorite medical coding content creator while you were studying who was a big help in passing your exam.

Those experts who continue to post great educational content for coders like yourself can also help you keep your knowledge fresh and up to date.

Practice Tests

Practice tests don't just have to be for students! They are a great opportunity for you to challenge yourself, even after passing the certification exam.

Retake ones you already have, or buy new practice exams from AAPC or another source.

Practicode

You might have heard of the Practicode program offered by AAPC. With Practicode, you have the chance to work through hundreds of redacted medical records at your own pace and apply your coding skills.

This is perhaps the priciest option I’ll discuss. However, successful completion of the program also means 1 year off your apprentice designation!

Study guides

One way to refresh yourself on what you've learned is to simply review your study guide or other materials. If you've been worried that your coding expertise is slipping, just review them from back to front, including any practice questions or knowledge checks.

Using your existing study resources, this method won't cost you anything!

Chapter Meetings

Lastly, why not attend a chapter meeting? They are a great way to continue learning as a coder, and on top of that, they offer a chance for you to network!

Really, anything you might have used to help prepare you for your coding exam can be used to refresh your memory.

Additionally, you can consider chapter meetings, webinars, and more to continue to learn, advance your skills, and stay on top of any changes while you're on the job hunt.
